In 1855, John Linnemann opened St. Joseph's first
general store in the front portion of his log home. John would invite his customers to spend the night. Cash was scarce so he relied heavily on credit and bartering. He ran the store until 1888, when his son, Joseph, took over the store. The Linnemann family continued to operate the business until it closed in 1991 after serving the community for 103 years. The last ten years it was owned by Jean (Linnemann) Dehler and her husband, Steve. |
Martin Loso opened Loso's in 1899 right next door to Linnemann's. Loso's sold many different items over the years including shoes, hardware and groceries. Loso's also was passed through the family. After Martin, Art and Helen and Walter bought it. Walter passed away shortly after and Art and Helen were sole owners which was from 1930 til 1956. Art passed way in 1956 and Helen continued to operate the store til 1980. Dick Loso owned the store until it closed in 2010 after contributing 111 years of quality service.

Mike Klein's Meat Market opened in 1909. It was located on the north side of Minnesota Street, west of College Ave. Ownership has passed on over the years. Kamrowski, Wolf, Mike Pfannenstein, John Pflueger, and Alois Pfannenstein Jr. In 1989 a fire erupted and destroyed a large portion of the original building. It was rebuilt as the meat processing building. A new building was constructed in it's present location. In 1997 he sold the Meat Market to his son, Harvey.
